America is drifting instead of declining as the nation's 250th anniversary nears.

Is America Declining or Just Adrift?

As we approach our nation’s 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 2026, many are pondering whether America is on the verge of an impressive comeback or experiencing a decline. It feels like everyone is grappling with these questions.

Interestingly, for the first time in history, fewer than half of Americans believe that the best days are ahead. A growing number of people seem to think the peak moments are behind them. In fact, about 80% of Americans fear their children will have a harder life than they did—a figure that has doubled over the last two decades. And concerns about the wellbeing of future generations compared to those in the past are growing as well.

But, is this really the case? Is America truly in decline? I found myself reflecting on this too. And my conclusion, quite simply, is no.

Some argue that we aren’t necessarily in decline; rather, we seem to be adrift. There’s a crucial distinction there. It appears we’ve lost our anchor to the foundational ideas that have shaped the American experiment and the American dream. We’re being swept along, tossed by various influences. While being adrift isn’t the same as declining, it certainly poses risks. America was never meant to just float along; it should navigate boldly, lifting its citizens and guiding the world.

Make no mistake: America remains a dominant force globally by numerous measures. Yet, we aren’t progressing toward a desired future. On a positive note, there’s a chance for us to redirect our course. What’s needed is a reminder of who we are and what we believe in, and a commitment to the principles that brought us here.

What are those principles? Trust, free enterprise, family values, accountability, and human dignity. Each generation has relied on these ideals to face challenges and overcome divisions. We need that same spirit today.

It’s clear: we can’t sit back and wait for someone else to revive America. Sure, there are important figures out there, but true leadership comes from you and me, alongside our fellow citizens. It might seem a bit overwhelming, but it can also be quite liberating. The future is in our hands.

This future will largely reflect our mindset. If we expect tomorrow to be worse, our actions will align with that belief—leading to reduced efforts and a sense of hopelessness. Conversely, if we genuinely believe that tomorrow will be better, our actions will reflect that optimism. Instead of remaining passive, we’ll be motivated to engage, tackling the issues around us rather than accepting them. Complacency should never be the norm because there is always a path forward.

It’s crucial to recognize that the stakes are high. If we don’t act, the risk of drifting into decline becomes very real. But if we rise to the occasion and embrace the time-tested principles that have characterized our best moments, America can regain its direction.

Thanks to people like you, we have all the resources to move ahead. Our workforce is among the most innovative and entrepreneurial globally. Our economy continues to draw admiration worldwide. Countless individuals aspire to make their lives in this land of freedom and opportunity. The narrative of our nation is written by the daily endeavors of its people making significant strides.

Throughout history, we’ve confronted great challenges. We’ve fought against injustices, established civil rights, and expanded opportunities for many. Each generation has sought to further perfect our union. We’re not there yet; there’s still much work to accomplish. But deep down, we all know it’s possible—and you play a vital role in making that happen.

This is your chance to reshape your future and that of your community and country, revitalizing the American Dream. You can achieve remarkable things while helping others reach their potential. Most importantly, we have a chance to demonstrate that the era of drifting is behind us. If we adhere to the principles that forged this nation, America’s future will undoubtedly be bright.
