MSNBC host Joy Reid said on “Read Out” Thursday that the United States is “numb and terrified at the same time” while discussing the terrorist attack in New Orleans.
“Tonight should have started a happy new year, but instead it turned into a tragic year marred by violence and death,” Reid said. During a New Year's celebration on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, a 42-year-old American citizen and Army veteran from Texas plowed his pickup truck into a crowd, killing 14 people and injuring more than 30 others. ”
She continued, “Another 18-year-old high school graduate was also killed. According to her mother, this was an act of terrorism. And now my baby is gone.” Don't go anywhere . This is a sentence that emphasizes America's never-ending era of violence. The victims, young, diverse, and out on New Year's Eve with friends as usual, represent the America we want to have. ”
Reed added, “It's America's New Year's Bell, and it's not a happy one. In the wake of the New Orleans attack, the Sugar Bowl has been postponed and rescheduled for today. This afternoon, The Notes Ludham University and Georgia State met in the college football quarterfinals. Outside the Superdome, flags were flying at half-staff. How fast does life go because it has to go on? But were those spectators and workers safe too? The question is, crime is actually decreasing in America over the years. We are not safe in this country, the most violent non-war country on earth. We are, frankly, intimidated, numbed and terrorized at the same time.”
