Turning Point USA Founder Assassinated
Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was tragically assassinated on Wednesday. In a conversation with Breitbart News, he expressed that “God is not happening with America,” reflecting on a previous assassination attempt against Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania last year.
Kirk recounted an experience from the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee last year while chatting with Breitbart News’ Washington Director, Matthew Boyle.
He recalled being at the gym when he saw the assassination attempt unfold on television, wearing a shirt featuring Trump’s iconic fist pump. “It was a really strange day,” he said. “I usually turn off my phone on Saturdays to respect the Sabbath, and though I’m not Jewish, I believe what we Christians do is important. But on that day, I was trying to get JD Vance into the vice presidency, so my phone was on.” He noted how his wife, Erica, encouraged him to keep his phone active.
Sitting in a large gym with his daughter, he was drawn to the TV as Trump took the stage. Kirk initially thought it was a false alarm, but concern set in when he noticed the blood on Trump’s face.
“My first thought was, ‘Oh, not again, like in 2016,'” he remembered. “When the agents swarmed around Trump, I wondered why he had blood. I felt like I was walking in slow motion across the gym towards the screen, watching a bloody Donald Trump raise his fist. I grabbed my phone and told everyone, ‘Something’s wrong, really wrong. I think he was shot.'” He continued, “People were confused about why I was on my phone.”
Within moments, rally attendees were reporting, “A shot was fired.” Kirk mentioned that they were among the first to tweet about the incident, and photos quickly emerged from the scene. He expressed gratitude that Trump was okay, noting the adrenaline high of the moment as he hoped there were no undiscovered bullet wounds.
When Boyle suggested that God’s providence was the reason Trump survived, Kirk agreed. “That’s the only explanation. God isn’t done with Donald Trump, and he certainly isn’t done with America. There’s a plan, and we’ll come to understand it.” He added, “I think God has seen everything—American civil war included.”
Sharing his memories from inside the Fiserve Forum during Trump’s entrance at the RNC, Kirk described the moment as “larger than life.” “It’s hard to find the right words,” he said. “When I saw Trump overlooking the crowd, it felt amazing. He seemed alive, joyful, and fully engaged. It made me feel so grateful—it was a reminder that I’m still here and have work to do.”
Kirk compared Trump’s entrance to that of a Roman general or medieval warrior returning triumphantly from battle, contrasting it with the modern political leaders who seem removed from the realities of war. “Nothing like this has happened since Ronald Reagan’s early administration 40 years ago,” he concluded.
