Birth Rates: A Comparison Between the US and Europe

It’s now evident: Americans are, in a sense, having more success in the bedroom than their European counterparts.

For the first time since the establishment of the European Union, the US has recorded more births than the EU, despite Europe’s larger population. In 2024, the EU noted approximately 3.56 million births across its 27 member countries, according to Eurostat. In contrast, the US tallied around 3.62 million births, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Interestingly, while the US has surpassed Europe in birth figures, it’s worth noting that 2023 represented a record low for American births. This is a part of a broader trend that seems to be continuing.

Over the decades, the US birth rate has steadily declined. The peak occurred in 2007 when the rate reached 2.12, but it hasn’t regained the replacement level of 2.1 since then. Various factors contribute to this decline, with a Heritage Foundation report from March 2025 highlighting that many women are opting to delay marriage and childbirth. Economic pressures, like inflation and the costs associated with raising children, are also cited as significant influences.

In my weekly newsletter, I’ve delved into why many Americans aren’t having as many children as before. It seems, fundamentally, that many simply don’t wish to. This points to a deeper cultural issue, one that tax cuts or parental leave policies might not resolve.

Young Americans today often prioritize their individual lifestyles and early career success over starting families. A recent survey by Harvard indicated that less than half of young Americans are considering having children. It appears that Generation Z tends to prioritize financial stability and marriage before thinking about parenthood.

Government interventions alone are unlikely to change these attitudes unless having larger families becomes a more desirable option again.
