Americans are united: AI should safeguard freedom of expression and rights

AI’s Role in Modern Life

Artificial intelligence, once just a concept in science fiction, has woven itself into the fabric of our daily existence. We use it to access information, interact with various services, and facilitate communication between them. It’s evolved past being merely a tool; AI has become a fundamental part of our infrastructure. This powerful force can either safeguard our freedoms or quietly undermine them.

In today’s politically charged environment, bridging the divide among Americans on many issues seems challenging. Yet, with AI, there’s a remarkable agreement. People across the spectrum recognize the need for these systems to uphold our essential rights.

Voters from both sides understand that AI should reflect the values that foster our freedoms. A recent poll revealed that a significant 77% of voters—80% of Republicans and 77% of Democrats—back legislation requiring developers and tech companies to ensure that AI systems uphold constitutional rights like freedom of speech and religious expression. It’s quite a rare consensus in our current political landscape.

The same survey indicated that over 70% of voters have concerns about the rising influence of AI in our economy and society. Interestingly, those worries cut across party lines, with 74% of Democrats and 70% of Republicans expressing that they are “very” or “somewhat interested” in the matter.

Americans are closely observing the unfolding AI revolution and are sending a direct message. If these systems are going to shape our future, they need to be governed by the principles that have preserved our freedoms for generations.

Why This Matters

This issue is not merely a theoretical concern. We are already witnessing outcomes from AI systems that prioritize narrow ideological perspectives instead of broader constitutional values.

For example, Google’s Gemini AI made headlines last year for generating historically inaccurate portrayals of historical figures. This wasn’t simply a glitch; it stemmed from an emphasis on “diversity” over factual correctness, revealing its ideological underpinning.

In another instance, China’s DeepSeek AI is programmed to sidestep criticism of the Communist Party. If you inquire about the Tiananmen Square Massacre, it simply doesn’t respond. AI systems fixated on power rather than truth become instruments of oppression.

Without proper oversight, AI systems in the U.S. could manipulate the news we consume, dictate what content gets visibility or is suppressed on social media, and control what opinions are deemed acceptable in public discussions, thereby reshaping society to align with their pre-set ideals.

Biased AI could influence policy debates by skewing public perception towards “solutions” that focus on social or environmental justice, ultimately reconstructing society while ignoring the principles of freedom, consent, and due process.

Regulatory Measures for Freedom

Some conservatives shy away from the term “regulation.” However, what we are discussing is not about strict controls or oversight but about integrating safeguards akin to those our founders established to restrict excessive governmental power. It is, in essence, a constitutional framework designed to prevent exploitation and maintain freedom.

If AI systems aren’t bound by these principles, they won’t be neutral; they’ll take on ideological characteristics. They won’t safeguard freedoms—they’ll merely compute outcomes. Consequently, this could facilitate censorship, coercion, and discrimination in the name of “progress.”

This growing demand for action among Americans reflects a crucial moment. The opportunity to influence the trajectory of AI is still present, but it won’t last forever. As these systems become more sophisticated and ingrained in our institutions, it’s increasingly challenging to ensure they uphold the values of freedom.

Seizing the Moment

We’re at a unique juncture of political clarity. Citizens across the spectrum agree that AI must respect the values that ensure our freedoms. They want these systems to promote speech, not stifle it. They seek AI that honors individual conscience instead of suppressing it. They envision AI that serves humanity rather than controls it.

This isn’t merely a political issue; it’s a moral imperative. It’s an opportunity that we must embrace before choices are made for us.

AI shouldn’t dictate our lives. Instead, it should be guided to provide us with freedoms we cherish.
