Americans Losing Their Appetite for Censorship of ‘False’ Information

According to a Pew Research poll, US support for limiting online information for “false” information is declining, even with limiting freedom of expression.

Since 2018, the number of Americans has been increasing support The US government and tech companies censor “false” information online.

Help to curb false information reached its peak in 2023, with 55% of the US government saying the US should limit false information, while 65% say tech companies should do the same.

Conversely, in 2023, only 42% of Americans who said they should protect their freedom of information, even if they mean publishing false information, while 32% said the same thing about high-tech companies protecting free expression online.

Currently, 51% of Americans say the government should limit false information online, with 4% of DIP two years ago, and 60% say tech platforms should limit false information representing a 5% decline.

Democrats and democratic independences are far more likely to support limiting false information than Republican and Republican-leaning independents.

43% of Republicans believe the US government should limit false information, while 58% of Democrats say the government should limit false information. In 2023, 70% of Democrats said the government should limit false information online.

The investigation comes at a time when the Trump administration moved to shutter the agency that worked to curb free expression online under the guise of fighting misinformation and false information.

Last week, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the closure of the Global Engagement Centre (GEC), a subagency of the State Department that served as part of the “censored industrial complex.”

“In the past decade, Americans have been slandered, fired, charged and even jailed simply for expressing their views,” Rubio wrote. “Today is over.”

He continued. “I’ve announced the closure @statedeptPreviously, there was information manipulation and interference from Counter Foreign Countries, formerly the Global Engagement Centre (GEC), which taxpayers spent more than $50 million a year actively silenced and censored the voices of Americans they were supposed to serve. ”
