Americans ‘More Hawkish’ on Illegal Immigration Since Trump

CNN senior political data reporter Harry Enten told “News Central” on Wednesday that Americans have “become pretty hawkish” on illegal immigration since President Donald Trump first took office. said.

“It's easy to see that there's been a huge change since Trump first took office eight years ago,” Enten said. “Deport all illegal immigrants. Back in 2015, it was 42%. 2016. 36% back in 2016 Look at where we are now, which was 56% at the end of last year, which is 20 points higher than it was right before Trump first took office. The sentiment toward immigration, the sentiment toward illegal immigration, and the sentiment toward deporting them all has become quite hawkish.”

He continued, “Again, we're trying to find the underlying sentiment of wanting to see lower immigration levels. This includes legal immigration and illegal immigration. Look at this, last year… 55%, the highest level since the aftermath of 9/11.

Enten added: “They want to reduce the number of people coming into this country. Look, this is up 14 points from 2023. 2016 when Donald Trump ran for president again for the first time. Back in 2017, that percentage was 38%. That's an increase of 17 points. So the bottom line is that since Donald Trump first took office, people's overall sentiment on immigration has become much more hawkish, and that of people who are in the country illegally. This means that the number of people who want to be deported is increasing.
