Americans believe both President Biden and former President Trump’s terms in office did more harm than good, but they think so for different reasons, a new survey finds.
of AP-NORC Public Relations Center Survey We found that people think Biden’s presidency has hurt the country because of the cost of living, immigration, and international relations. Those surveyed said Trump’s stay in the White House had a negative impact on the country’s voting rights, election security, international relations, abortion laws and climate change.
Fifty-eight percent of respondents, and an overwhelming majority of Republicans (87%), said Biden has hurt the country on the cost of living. Similarly, 56% of all respondents say Mr. Biden has harmed the country on immigration and border security, while 88% of Republican respondents agree.
Biden scored better than respondents on issues such as job creation, but ratings were still mixed. Thirty-six percent of respondents said Biden has helped create jobs, 36% said he has had a negative impact on job creation, and 27% were undecided.
47% of respondents believe that both Biden and Trump have hurt America’s relationships with other countries. Respondents fell along party lines, with a majority of Democrats more likely to say President Trump has harmed the United States internationally, and a majority of Republicans saying the same about Biden.
Forty-six percent of respondents said President Trump’s term in office has had a negative impact on voting rights and election laws. A majority of Democrats (75%) say he has had a negative impact on the electoral process, while 54% of Republicans say he has had a negative impact on the electoral process.
Trump also received poor ratings for his stance on abortion and climate change, which the Biden campaign is trying to capitalize on.
While some Democrats say Biden has had a negative impact on some areas, few Republicans think Trump has had a negative impact on any issues, the survey found.
When voters were asked about the personal benefits of a candidate’s time in office, Mr. Trump received higher ratings from his party than Mr. Biden. Seventy-seven percent of Republicans say Trump has helped them more, while 52% of Democrats say Biden has helped them better.
The survey was conducted among 1,204 people from April 4 to 8, and had a margin of error of 3.9 percentage points.
