The funds received by universities from the federal government are often in the form of grants and are used for research and development, facilities, administrative fees and student assistance.

President Donald Trump has been under scrutiny of federal funding for schools, indicating that his administration could lose taxpayers' access to dollars if he fails to remove DEI policies.

Additionally, the Trump administration has suspended federal funding at the University of Pennsylvania by including trans athletes in women's sports. The government also warned that if Columbia University does not properly address anti-Semitism on campus, it could lose $400 million in federal funds.

Each year, the Department of Education issues approximately $100 billion in student loans and distributes more than $30 billion in Pell Grants. Trump ordered the Department of Education to be abolished, but he said he wanted to preserve Pell's grants in full and move student loans under small business management.

The University of Pennsylvania told Fox News Digital in a statement that loss of federal funds “puts critical research at risk.”

“Federal funding is frozen, and cancellations risk life-saving and life-improving research. That loss will be felt by society and individuals well beyond our campus for years to come. Naturally, we have heard that concerns from directly affected scientists, students and young faculty are involved in the care of our research,” the university said.
