Upcoming Changes to American Express Platinum Card
As premium credit cards gain more popularity, there’s been talk about what American Express might introduce for its Platinum card. Questions surrounding potential fee increases have emerged, particularly during a recent revenue call with the company’s CEO and CFO on July 18th.
The CEO noted that while there will be a need to observe a turning point in fee growth, they expect moderate increases for the rest of this year. American Express representatives did not provide additional details.
Right now, the Amex Platinum Card charges an annual fee of $695, contrasting with the Chase Sapphire Reserve’s fee of $795. American Express plans to share more information about the Platinum card in the fall, and there’s some speculation that the fees might eventually reach around $1,000.
“To think that everyone is just refreshing their products based on competitors is a bit off,” stated CEO Stephen Squeri. “We have our own timeline.” Current cardholders enjoy various perks, such as exclusive access to certain airport lounges, which are becoming increasingly sought after. In light of this, executives were asked about managing overcrowding in these spaces.
“We’re working on expanding lounge capacity,” Squeri mentioned. “Airport authorities have truly benefited from the surge in lounge demand.” He highlighted a new lounge concept in Las Vegas designed for quick visits, where cardholders could grab a drink, with collaboration from Delta to alleviate crowding.
Squeri also expressed optimism about ongoing innovations. “We’re focused on expanding existing lounges and exploring additional locations to cater to growing demand.”
In the second quarter, the company reported revenue of $17.9 billion, up 9% from the previous year, driven in part by increased spending and higher card fees. However, Amex stock dipped by over 2.3% by market close.
While Squeri emphasized targeting premium users and hinted at an upcoming “refresh” for the Platinum card, the specifics around its cost remain unclear.
