Amex Platinum upgrade opportunity: Find out if you qualify

Considering an Upgrade to the Amex Platinum Card

Every so often, an enticing offer comes along that makes you reconsider your choices, even if it means parting with a beloved credit card.

A few weeks back, I found myself exploring online for attractive welcome offers on new cards, particularly the American Express Platinum Card®. I was genuinely excited about the new benefits this card provided, from generous dining credits to improved entertainment perks, plus access to an impressive selection of airport lounges.

The welcome offers for the Amex Platinum are quite personalized. New cardholders can potentially earn up to 175,000 bonus points, provided they spend $8,000 within the first six months. It’s worth noting that eligibility for these offers can vary widely.

I’ve been a loyal user of the American Express® Gold Card for a while, and honestly, I never considered upgrading or switching to a different card.

However, when I weighed the top personalized Platinum offer (which would give me 80,000 Membership Rewards points for spending $8,000 in six months) against the Gold card’s upgrade (125,000 points for $6,000 in the same timeframe), the decision to upgrade became clear.

Exploring the Amex Platinum Welcome Offer

Finding a compelling offer took me several attempts over days, as I searched for something related to the Amex Platinum that would really catch my interest.

Since Amex limits cardmembers to a single card bonus per lifetime, discovering a worthwhile offer is crucial. I did manage to snag the maximum bonus of 175,000 points; however, I would have been satisfied with anything around 100,000 points or above.

That said, the offers I stumbled upon were, frankly, underwhelming.

One notably disappointing bonus came from the pre-approval tool, which suggested I could earn a mere 50,000 bonus points after spending $8,000 within six months. While it felt reassuring to see I was approved, only 50,000 points? Especially since my Amex Gold Card allows new users to collect up to 100,000 points with a $6,000 spend in the first six months. I couldn’t help but think, come on, Amex!

In my quest for higher Amex Platinum benefits, I tried various strategies, such as using an incognito browser and checking repeatedly over several days. The most promising offer I could find was for 80,000 bonus points after spending $8,000 within six months.

But even that felt lackluster. It appeared to me that this was an outdated offer before Amex updated its personalized offers in June 2025.

Eventually, after many attempts and quite a bit of frustration, I decided to let it go.

Surprisingly, I discovered that the best option to elevate my Membership Rewards balance was already sitting in my account.

Check Your Amex Account for Offers

Upon logging into my account, I found an enticing offer for the Amex Platinum Card.

It turned out that the upgrade offer was conveniently located on my homepage. All I needed to do was scroll through my recent transactions. I was eligible for an upgrade where I could earn 125,000 bonus points for spending $6,000 within the first six months of membership.

This was more than what I had initially aimed for, and the spending requirement was lower than I thought at only $6,000 compared to the previous $8,000.

Could I say goodbye to my Amex Gold? Well, I could always apply again later (without eligibility for the welcome bonus, though). Still, I was keen on trying out the Platinum Card, and this enticing offer solidified my decision.

I hadn’t anticipated that my push towards the Platinum Bonus would involve upgrading my Gold card, but upon immediate application attempts, I found nothing remotely close to the 125,000-point offer.

Conclusion

Upgrading a card you already own doesn’t always guarantee you the best bonus. I didn’t foresee that this would be my path to a new Amex Platinum card.

As a new Platinum Card member, I’ve already earned a substantial welcome bonus and am now daydreaming about how to use my 125,000 Membership Rewards points.

If you’re thinking about getting the Amex Platinum and already own an Amex card, it’s definitely worth logging into your account to check for some potentially fantastic upgrade offers. You might just discover more than 100,000 points waiting for you.
