The American Express Platinum and Gold cards come with monthly Uber and Uber Eats credits, which go a long way towards offsetting the high annual fees of each card.
Previously, you could stack multiple credits on one account by simply adding each card as a payment type on your Uber account. This meant that if you had multiple Household Golds or Platinums, you could combine them all and use the combined credits on a single Uber or Uber Eats order, paying with any card linked to your Uber account.
But starting November 8th, you'll need to pay with an Amex card to use your Uber credits. Depending on how this rule is applied, it could mean anything from a minor annoyance to a major loss in value.
A quick observation
American Express is terms of service Uber credits included with Platinum and Gold cards:
please note: Starting November 8, 2024, to redeem Uber Cash received through this offer, you'll need to not only turn on Uber Cash, but also select your American Express card as the payment method for transactions in the Uber or Uber Eats app.
These terms will not change your total Amex Uber credit amount, but will prevent you from applying Uber credit to purchases made with a non-Amex card.
Starting in November, if you want to use Amex Uber Cash for an Uber ride or Uber Eats order, you must use an Amex card as your payment method. It doesn't have to be the Amex Platinum or Amex Gold card that the credit was issued with, it seems any Amex card can be used.
The big question is whether you can combine multiple credits into one account and use them together, as long as your Amex card is selected as the payment source. If you can, then it's not a big deal.
But in the end, it becomes a huge bummer when you can only apply one credit per order. Currently, my wife and I receive $40 in credits each month (2x$15 and 1x$10) and we use that total of $40 on one takeout meal each month.
If you can no longer stack these credits, you'll need to make three separate orders or rides to redeem the perk, which could get even more tedious and expensive depending on Uber Eats fees.
We are trying to find out more details about this upcoming change and will update this post as more information becomes available.
