Amid War With Russia, Volodymyr Zelensky Dismisses Senior Ukrainian Army Commander

President Zelensky dismissed the Commander of the Joint Forces of Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday replaced the top official leading forces in the country’s eastern conflict zone who had been accused of incompetence and abuse of power during the Russian military advance.

The move comes as Kiev has struggled to stave off Moscow’s forces in the east for months, nearly two and a half years into the war.

“I have decided to replace Commander of the Joint Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Lieutenant General Yuri Sodr, with Brigadier General Andriy Gnatov,” President Zelenskyy said in his daily evening address.

He did not provide details about the reasons for his dismissal, but the decision came following criticism from the commander of the Azov Brigade, known for its ties to the far-right.

Azov commander Bogdan Krotevich had filed a complaint with the SBU security services the previous day, demanding an investigation into Sodor.

According to media reports, Krotevich accused Sodr of incompetence and blamed him for the deaths of Ukrainian soldiers on the front line.

Ukraine, outnumbered and outgunned by Russia, has been on the backfoot for months, with Moscow’s forces capturing a new village in the east almost every week but not achieving any major breakthroughs.
