Amnesty International, Press Freedom Org Call Out Mexico over Journalist Killings

Amnesty International and the Committee to Protect Journalists condemn the Mexican government for the continued violence against journalists and the lack of protection even for journalists placed under the Targeted Journalists Police Program. .

This week, the two international organizations released a joint report No one guarantees my safety: There is an urgent need to strengthen Mexico’s federal policies to protect journalistss. The report is highly critical of Mexico’s failure to protect journalists. The report notes that in the past seven years, eight journalists have been killed while participating in special programs for journalists that the federal government claims protects and targets. is emphasized. There are currently 651 journalists in Mexico under the program’s “protection” who have been targeted, threatened or attacked.

The report states that various journalists interviewed by Amnesty International and CPJ continued to receive threats and harassment despite being under the protection of the program, which was described as “slow, bureaucratic and “He lacks empathy,” he is quoted as saying. ”

“The time has come for the Mexican state to act and show that it is finally ready to take seriously its obligations regarding press freedom,” said CPJ President Jean-Albert Hoetssen.

The report calls on the Mexican government to not only improve its programs but also end impunity for crimes against journalists.

The report comes as various press freedom groups have labeled Mexico one of the deadliest countries in the world for journalists. The topic of violence against journalists has been one of the most controversial topics under the administration of Mexican President Andres Manuel López Obrador. Mexico’s president has been publicly accused of verbally attacking and targeting journalists who write or report on critical articles. As reported by Breitbart Texas, López Obrador recently wrote to the press office about the cartel boss’s funding of her campaign and her son’s alleged ties to criminals. The incident drew international criticism for revealing the personal information of the American journalist who sent the message.
