Amy Duggar King Shares Family Secrets in New Memoir
Amy Duggar King has unveiled a deeply personal account in her memoir titled “Sacred Destroyer: Shatter the Glossy Facade by Shouting Out with the Truth.” The former reality star, known from “19 Kids and Counting,” reveals unsettling details about her grandfather, Jimmy Lee Duggar, including the physical abuse her mother, Deanna, endured. She emphasizes that family secrets can dramatically impact relationships.
Amy alleges that Jimmy Lee nearly “murdered” her mother over a disagreement about her relationship. In a distressing account, she details how he attacked Deanna, saying, “He grabbed her by the throat, carried her from the kitchen to the bed, and jumped on top of her,” almost choking her. It was only when Deanna called for help that her brother, Jim Bob Duggar, intervened, saving her life.
In a conversation prior to the book’s release on October 14, Amy expressed concern that some family members might be unaware of the full extent of her grandfather’s abusive behavior. “There’s a dark shadow he cast. I’m not sure everyone in the family knows that,” she reflected, noting that this topic may not have been openly discussed among her cousins.
She continued, “Abuse can be generational. I believe this story needs to be told, and I think some families may find themselves shocked.” Despite some humorous memories involving her grandfather, she admits boundaries were eventually set as her family learned to be cautious around him.
Amy acknowledges her own lack of knowledge about her grandfather’s past until she uncovered troubling secrets, including his troubled upbringing and struggles with addiction. She also narrates incidents from her mother’s childhood, highlighting the chaos of her home life, where verbal and physical confrontations were frequent.
Reflecting on a particularly harrowing family incident, she described how her grandfather violently confronted her mother, leaving her with deep emotional scars. “The stories I hear never truly go away. It’s a painful history,” she admitted.
