Amy McGrath launches another campaign for the US Senate

Amy McGrath Eyes Senate Run in Kentucky

Amy McGrath, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, is gearing up for another campaign, aiming to succeed long-time Republican lawmakers who are stepping down in 2026. McGrath previously lost to incumbent Mitch McConnell in 2020 by nearly 20% and faced defeat against Republican Rep. Andy Barr in the 2018 House race.

In a recent post, she expressed concerns about democracy, stating, “Our democracy is under siege, cowards in Washington are succumbing to Donald Trump, and Kentuckians are paying the price.” Accompanied by a campaign video, she emphasized the abnormality of current leadership, saying, “What we see from this president is not normal.” It’s a daring stance, one that clearly signals her intent to challenge the status quo.

Interestingly, McConnell has held his Senate seat since 1985, and it’s been over 30 years since Kentucky elected a Democrat to the Senate. The landscape is, perhaps, shifting, as candidates in Kentucky begin to distance themselves from McConnell’s support.

The last time voters in the Bluegrass State chose a Democratic representative for the Senate was back in 1992 with Wendell Ford’s re-election.

McGrath’s campaign highlights her unique background as the first woman in the Marines to fly a combat mission on the F/A-18, noting her 20 years of service and the fact that she skipped 89 combat missions. This military experience may give her an edge as she positions herself against her opponents.

Alongside her, state Rep. Pamela Stevenson and other figures from Kentucky’s political left are expected to compete in the Democratic primary for the Senate seat, making the race more intriguing.
