Conan O’Brien’s Oscars Joke Sparks Controversy

During the Oscars on Sunday night, Conan O’Brien made a quip about an “alternative” ceremony hosted by Kid Rock, referencing the past involvement of Kid Rock with the 2026 Oscars. His remark seemed to poke fun at outsiders in Hollywood, hinting at Charlie Kirk’s conservative group, Turning Point USA.

“I want to give you a heads-up that things might get a bit political tonight,” O’Brien remarked while on stage. “If that makes you uneasy, there’s another Oscar event hosted by Kid Rock over at Dave & Buster’s not far from here.”

While O’Brien aimed to brush off Turning Point USA as insignificant, his joke highlighted that the organization has gained enough traction in cultural discussions to warrant mention. Interestingly, he opted to call out Kid Rock instead of directly naming the conservative figurehead’s organization, suggesting that he was aware of its implications.

Not long ago, Turning Point USA had organized the “All American Halftime Show,” which attracted millions of viewers during a politically charged Super Bowl performance by Bad Bunny in Spain.

“What a great sign of success for the @TPUSA halftime show. You hit a nerve, and they had to react. Kudos!” wrote author Steve Deace in response. Others on social media echoed similar sentiments, pointing out that even mild criticism directed at TPUSA showed they were making an impact.

Conservative commentator Graham Allen criticized O’Brien for his “cheap shot” at TPUSA’s halftime event during the Oscars, lamenting that “no one watches the Oscars anymore.”

Additionally, Jack Posobiec, a close associate of Charlie Kirk, called out O’Brien, referencing a family incident to throw shade at the comedian. Meanwhile, Tyler Bowyer, COO of Turning Point USA, suggested that O’Brien might be envious of the viewership numbers that TPUSA’s event attracted compared to O’Brien’s final season on TBS.
