An anesthesiologist’s former employer addresses issues during murder trial

Doctor's wife claims he attempted to push her off a cliff during a hike in Hawaii

Body Camera Footage Reveals Disturbing Scene After Alleged Attack

Jurors were presented with graphic footage captured by police body cameras showing Ariel Koenig, covered in blood and visibly disoriented, sitting on a hiking trail. This occurred shortly after an alleged assault, as passersby attempted to assist her while officers assessed the situation.

A former employer of the accused anesthetist, Dr. Gerhard König, remarked on the accessibility of lethal knowledge in the field. Dr. Jonathan Waters expressed his disbelief over the accusations against his former mentor, suggesting that it wouldn’t be difficult for an anesthesiologist to commit such an act since the medications they handle are often intended to bring individuals close to death.

Waters described Koenig as intelligent and said he had never witnessed him lose his temper, which is quite the contrast to the violent charges he now faces in Maui.

During this week’s trial, jurors also viewed haunting police body camera footage from the aftermath of the attack. The video highlighted Ariel Koenig, stumbling and bleeding from a remote hiking trail in Oahu, as two hikers, upon hearing cries for assistance, rushed to her side, trying to keep her conscious as blood flowed from her wounds.

Officer Kevin Chun from Honolulu Police gave testimony indicating that Ariel appeared exhausted and confused when they arrived. Prosecutors allege that her husband, Gerhard, became violent upon discovering she was having an emotional affair while they were hiking.

Authorities say he attempted to push her off a cliff, tried to inject her with a syringe, and then struck her repeatedly with a rock. Jurors viewed various photos from the scene, including bloodstains and items thought to be linked to the assault.

Following the incident, Gerhard fled but was later apprehended by police, who noticed blood on his shirt. A pursuit ensued, during which he resisted arrest. Investigators also found a bag associated with him, reportedly containing a backpack, cell phone, and medication.

In a counterclaim, Gerhard’s lawyers argue that Ariel was the aggressor and that he acted in self-defense when he struck her with the rock. Koenig has pleaded not guilty to all charges brought against him.
