Last week was quite eventful for Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, as it was filled with legal challenges. Early on Monday, federal agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) carried out a search warrant at her home in Washington, D.C. This action is part of a continuing investigation into her immigration status, with sources indicating that authorities are examining whether she or her father committed fraud while applying for her U.S. citizenship.
The day after the raid, Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. attorney for the District of Washington, D.C., revealed that her office is looking into Omar’s financial disclosures. Though these disclosures had already undergone public examination and congressional oversight, this marked the first time authorities were involved.
Overview of the Financial Disclosure Investigation
In May 2025, Omar completed her financial disclosures for the previous year, revealing assets valued between $6 million and $30 million attributed to two businesses owned by her husband, Tim Mynett—a venture capital firm and a Californian winery. This raised eyebrows, particularly since her previous year’s finances indicated those assets were worth a mere $15,000 to $51,000.
Specifically, the winery’s reported value increased dramatically, from $15,000 to $50,000 in 2023 to between $1 million and $5 million in 2024, while her husband’s capital firm jumped from a reported value of $1 to $1,000 to between $5 million and $25 million over the same period. This sudden increase prompted the National Legal and Policy Center to file a complaint by February this year.
Shortly after the complaint, Omar revised her disclosure, bringing the reported assets down to between $18,004 and $95,000 and asserting that the businesses held no value after liabilities were factored in. She attributed this significant difference to an accounting error and has since claimed she is not a millionaire.
The Office of Congressional Conduct subsequently recommended dismissing allegations of misconduct, yet the situation drew the attention of Pirro, who confirmed investigations into the discrepancies were underway. Specific details about these inquiries have yet to emerge.
Details on the Immigration Investigation
The raid on Omar’s home shocked many in the political scene, and some critics speculated it could be politically motivated, occurring just three weeks before general elections in November. The Trump administration has denied any such claims.
During the raid, which lasted several hours, HSI agents reportedly confiscated Omar’s personal cellphone, computers, and passport. Since the incident, she has not made any public appearances. Investigators are particularly interested in whether she or her father filled out immigration forms fraudulently when she became a citizen years ago. Reports suggest the overarching aim of the investigation may be to revoke her citizenship.
Additionally, several individuals, including family members, have been subpoenaed in connection to the case.
President Donald Trump weighed in on the matter, stating he believed Omar to be “totally crooked” and expressing his discontent regarding her criticisms of the United States Constitution. Similarly, Vice President JD Vance mentioned in an interview that while he would prefer to let the legal aspects determine the outcome, there is indeed a possibility that denaturalization could occur if warranted by facts of the case.
Omar has not directly commented following the raid, though she did express her views on social media, calling the action an “outrageous abuse of power” and labeling it as part of an intensifying use of federal law enforcement against political opponents.
In essence, the situation surrounding Rep. Ilhan Omar continues to unfold, filled with complexities that reflect the often turbulent intersection of politics and personal conduct.
