Ana Navarro Blames ‘Mental Health Issues’ for Trump Assassination Attempts

Ana Navarro told the co-hosts of ABC's “The View” on Monday that the second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump was driven in part by “the continued easy access of assault weapons to people with mental illnesses.”

“I kept reading tweets yesterday from officials of both parties that said, there is no place for political violence in America. We condemn political violence. We condemn it no matter what it's done or attempted against. But when Rep. Gabby Giffords of Arizona was shot in the head at an event in our district, when the House baseball team was shot at, when Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband was bashed in the skull with a hammer by a political opponent, when people stormed the Capitol on January 6th and there have been two attacks on Donald Trump, how can they think there is no place for political violence? This is the America we live in and political violence is just a part of it. The bomb threat in Springfield. I consider that political violence,” Navarro said.

She added: “We need to have a conversation about how people with mental illness continue to have easy access to assault weapons, weapons of war. The last assassination attempt was with an AR-15. This time it was with an AK-47. So we need to have that conversation in America. We need to have a bipartisan conversation. And members of Congress need to recognize that this isn't just an issue when we have a crazed shooter, it's not just an issue when we have Democrats, it's an issue with everyone. And we're all at risk. It's a conversation that needs to be had. It's an uncomfortable conversation, but it needs to be had.”
