Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Faculty Recruitment
A recent analysis reveals that diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) continue to play a significant role in faculty recruitment within higher education.
In July, a study conducted by a nonpartisan group, Heterodox Academy, examined job listings for over 10,000 faculty positions for the 2024-25 academic year. The findings showed that 22.3% of these positions requested DEI statements or related materials.
Private universities were more likely to require DEI statements, with 28.6% of openings making such requests, compared to 19% at public institutions.
The report suggested that this difference stems from recent legislation preventing public universities from asking for DEI statements from faculty applicants.
President Donald Trump has issued multiple executive orders aimed at addressing DEI initiatives. One such order, issued in January, directed the Attorney General and Secretary of Education to identify any potential civil compliance violations concerning donor agencies with budgets exceeding $1 billion. In turn, this would lead to an action plan intended to “deter DEI programs or principles that constitute illegal discrimination or preferences.”
Interestingly, the analysis pointed out that coastal public universities were more inclined to seek DEI statements than their counterparts in the Midwest and Southeast regions. Among Baccalaureate Colleges, primarily those offering bachelor’s degrees, 42.8% of job openings featured DEI requests.
Additionally, the necessity for DEI statements varied by discipline: 25.5% for STEM fields, 23.5% in the humanities, and 24.8% in social sciences.
The study highlighted that while DEI requests are prevalent, the perception that they are mostly confined to certain academic areas may be misleading.
Moreover, institutions incorporated DEI elements in different ways within their job advertisements. While some required a separate DEI statement, others asked applicants to weave it into their cover letters or educational philosophies.
