Rams Struggle in Season Opener Against 49ers
The Los Angeles Rams didn’t exactly show they’re ready for a Super Bowl run in their first game of the season.
Considered one of the favorites to win the Lombardi Trophy, the Rams displayed a lackluster performance in Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers.
Head coach Sean McVay was clearly outsmarted on the sidelines, and quarterback Matthew Stafford’s performance fell short. It was surprising to see reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett go missing, with zero contributions in his debut. Meanwhile, Aaron Donald was stuck watching from Los Angeles.
The result? A disappointing 27-7 defeat to the 49ers.
NFL analyst Danny Parkins noted the unexpected nature of the Rams’ struggle, saying, “I think the most surprising thing about the whole thing is seven points. The Rams scored seven points in a football game.” His thoughts lingered on the apparent ineffectiveness of the Rams’ offense.
The loss marked the Rams’ largest margin of defeat in 38 games, and Stafford’s seven points were the fewest he’s managed in a start over 84 games. He also posted his lowest passer rating in 70 games and failed to throw a touchdown for the first time in 18 games.
While it’s often said that Week 1 doesn’t always define the season, the Rams certainly didn’t make a strong statement with their performance, which fell flat in what was anticipated to be an exciting season ahead.
