MSNBC Fires Analyst Matthew Dowd After Controversial Remarks
MSNBC has terminated political analyst Matthew Dowd following his remarks about Charlie Kirk’s shooting, which were considered “hateful.” The network had already condemned Dowd’s statements on social media.
In a statement, MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler expressed regret over Dowd’s comments, stating, “There is no place for political or other violence in America.” A spokesperson for the network declined to provide any additional comments. Dowd joined MSNBC in 2022 after a lengthy career at ABC News.
After Kirk was shot and subsequently died at the age of 31, Dowd implied that such violence was a consequence of Kirk’s “hateful words” directed at various groups. Kirk had been a prominent conservative activist and ally to former President Trump.
Before news of Kirk’s passing, Dowd mentioned during an appearance on MSNBC that, “We don’t know more about this yet,” adding the shooting might have involved a supporter acting out during a celebration.
Dowd characterized Kirk as “one of the most divisive” young figures, suggesting that his inflammatory rhetoric negatively impacted society. “I think that’s the environment we’re in,” he said, implying that people often overlook the consequences of such discourse.
His comments sparked widespread criticism, leading many to call for his dismissal. Dowd attempted to clarify his position on the platform Bluesky, stating, “I apologize for my tone and words. Let’s be clear. I am not going to comment to blame Kirk for this horrifying attack.” Dowd, a former Republican strategist now identifying as an independent Democrat, is known for his staunch opposition to the GOP and once ran for the Democratic nomination for Texas lieutenant governor in 2021.
