Reactions to Senator’s Removal from Press Conference
CNN national security analyst Josh Campbell defended Homeland Security Secretary Christa Noem after her agents forcibly removed Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif) from a press conference in Los Angeles. He stated that their actions aligned with standard security procedures.
During an appearance on CNN’s “Arena,” Campbell, a former FBI agent, explained that there were several critical moments leading up to Padilla’s removal. After Padilla shouted out, he was initially escorted out of the room.
“From a law enforcement perspective, we see three distinct incidents occurring in quick succession,” Campbell noted.
Firstly, he mentioned that Noem was speaking to the press, not conducting a Q&A where interruptions would be more acceptable. “She was interrupted loudly, and her security had to respond knowing he was a senator,” he remarked, emphasizing that disruptions in such settings can lead to serious consequences.
Things escalated further when Padilla resisted and returned to confront the agents. “The second notable incident occurred when he turned back towards them,” Campbell added. “At that point, the security detail had to act to remove him, even if it was against his will.”
However, Campbell expressed concern about the tactics used by federal agents during the incident, especially as Padilla was pushed to the ground and handcuffed outside the press room. “This raises significant questions about the methods employed,” he said, pointing out that there are often various ways to handle such situations. He questioned whether less aggressive approaches could have been utilized, especially in a federal building where tensions could be heightened.
Despite the criticism, Campbell stood by Noem, stating, “This incident shouldn’t be blamed on Secretary Noem. She was in the middle of a press conference; this isn’t her fault.”
Padilla’s removal came after he interrupted Noem’s remarks about ongoing anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles, questioning her claims about lawlessness in the state. As security intervened, Padilla shouted, “Hands off!” while resisting and asserting his position as a senator even as he was restrained.
In response to the incident, Padilla criticized the aggressive tactics, remarking, “If this is how DHS responds to a senator with questions, I can only imagine how they’re treating farm workers…”
Noem responded to Fox News, claiming that Padilla “exploded into the room,” did not identify himself properly, and approached the podium aggressively before being detained.
This story is pending further comments from both DHS and Padilla.
