Jean-Pierre Discusses Biden’s Challenges Amid Democratic Party Discontent
CBS hosts Tony Dokoupil and Gayle King recently questioned former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre regarding her views on Democratic efforts to persuade President Joe Biden to exit the 2024 race, as well as her assertion that he’s always been sharp.
Dokoupil remarked, “When I saw your book titled ‘The Broken White House,’ I imagined you’d advocate for Biden to step aside, given the struggles he seemed to face. Instead, you express anger towards those attempting to remove him.” He further noted that some might react with disbelief at this sentiment.
In her latest book, Jean-Pierre expresses her disillusionment with the Democratic Party, stating she “can no longer stand” to be associated with it due to its treatment of the former president. Earlier this year, she exited the party, drawing scorn from both sides of the political spectrum.
She mentioned that many Americans are approaching her, confused about the Democratic Party’s direction, and emphasized that her book offers a way forward, even amidst disillusionment.
Co-host King commented, “I was thinking the same thing. You noted that many expect his inner circle to voice concerns about what seems like Biden’s decline, yet you claimed not to have witnessed anything unusual.” She recalled an instance where they were on a plane together prior to a debate, and Jean-Pierre stated she saw no troubling signs.
Jean-Pierre described that it was an “unusual” trip since she was accompanied by family, which may have influenced her observations.
Biden’s poor performance against Donald Trump in the June 2024 debate has been credited with prompting considerable pressure on him to withdraw from the race. Jean-Pierre affirmed her commitment to addressing concerns about Biden’s health, asserting, “I was his press secretary. I met with him regularly and traveled alongside him.”
King pressed further, asking, “Did you genuinely not see any signs?”
Jean-Pierre responded, emphasizing, “We always acknowledged that aging is a part of life. But I consistently viewed Biden as mentally resilient.” She added, “He was passionate, knowledgeable about policy, and aware of historical context.”
Jean-Pierre also suggested that the two-party system is in disarray, pointing to recent protests advocating for broader public power. “Real power should lie with the people, rather than being concentrated in the White House or any single entity,” she stated.
During her tenure, Jean-Pierre repeatedly defended Biden from inquiries about his mental fitness, especially amid emerging reports about his declining influence.
