Historic Castle Near Milan is Up for Sale

There’s a medieval castle available for purchase not far from one of Italy’s most bustling cities, but it comes with some important considerations.

Landriano Castle, listed by International Real Estate, is situated about 15 miles southeast of Milan. This impressive structure, known as Lombardy Castle, dates back to the 11th century and features 10 bedrooms and 10 full bathrooms across more than 102,000 square feet.

Diretta Giorgoro, a housing director at Sotheby’s International Realty, noted that the castle has “very ancient origin.” Interestingly, archaeological finds from the sixth century have surfaced on the property, which certainly adds a layer of intrigue.

“The first written reference to the castle was in 1037 when Emperor Conrad II ordered its destruction during a conflict with Milan,” Giorgoro explained. Medieval architectural elements, including a central courtyard, fortified gates, and a tower, were constructed between the 11th and 13th centuries.

“It’s not just a property; it’s a chapter from a thousand years ago in Europe’s history waiting to be reborn.”

In a significant transformation, the castle was altered in 1531 from a military stronghold to a Renaissance residence. This renovation introduced stunning fresco halls and intricate staircases.

Additionally, the structure was part of the Battle of Landriano in 1529, an event during the war involving the Cognac Federation, Giorgoro added.

“Visitors can still marvel at the medieval arches in the Renaissance courtyard which boasts terracotta, Gothic windows, and Tuscan pillars,” she described. “Inside, there are remarkable spaces like the Amolini Hall of Fame and the private studioro of the Taberna family featuring frescos attributed to the Tibaldi School.”

The property includes moats that are fed by the Lambro River. Giorgoro asserted that this listing is a once-in-a-century opportunity.

“It’s quite rare for a castle of this size to be on the market, especially given its proximity to Milan and Pavia,” she mentioned. “Many similar castles have either fallen into ruin or been designated as public heritage long ago.”

However, I should point out, there are a couple of caveats. For one, the asking price is currently undisclosed, which typically happens with protected Italian heritage properties.

“This property requires full restoration, but it remains a sleeping giant,” Giorgoro emphasized. “It’s one of the few chances to acquire and breathe new life into such a significant piece of European history.” She added, “The castle holds nearly a thousand years of history within its walls.”

“The castle is enveloped in folk tales.”

Giorgoro mentioned that the castle’s history intertwines with local legends, including that of Giannetta, a 16th-century herbalist accused of witchcraft and executed in the square outside the castle. In this way, the castle presents “two parallel stories.”

The Castle of Landriano is available at a time when other historic estates in Europe are also hitting the market. For example, a 12th-century medieval British monastery, St. John’s Jerusalem, is recently listed around £3.25 million (approximately $4.4 million), with lease terms extending until 2122.
