Ancient Helmet Stolen in Museum Heist Found in Netherlands

A valuable cultural symbol from Romania, a helmet dating back 2,500 years, has been recovered after being stolen in a museum robbery last year.

The helmet, originating from Kotofenesti, was located over a year after a photo of it was taken in January 2025. This week, it was unveiled under armed guard at the Dolenz Museum in Assen, northeastern Netherlands.

At the time of the photo, the helmet was on loan to the museum.

“We are incredibly pleased,” stated Corien Farner, chief prosecutor at the North Netherlands Public Prosecutor’s Office, during a press conference. “This has truly been a roller coaster, not just for Romania, but also for the museum staff.”

Following the heist last year, three individuals were quickly apprehended. They were suspected of using improvised firework explosives and a sledgehammer to break into the museum, stealing the helmets. There were concerns that the helmet’s fame could complicate its resale.

Police released grainy security footage from the incident, showing the thieves using a crowbar to access the building and triggering an explosion.

Radu Marinescu, Romania’s Justice Minister, referred to the crime as an affront to the nation, emphasizing that recovering the items was of utmost importance.

Additionally, two of the three gold wristbands taken in the robbery have been found, but authorities are still searching for the third one.

The recovery of the artifacts was part of a negotiation with the suspects involved.

The items were originally displayed in the museum as part of a six-month exhibit when they were stolen.

During the news conference, Robert van Lang, the Dolenz Museum’s director, mentioned, “The helmet has some slight dents, but thankfully, there won’t be any permanent damage.” He also noted that the condition of the armband is flawless.

The trial for the suspects is set to commence later this month.
