Ancient Roman Settlement Found in the Cotswolds
Archaeologists have uncovered a substantial ancient Roman settlement in a picturesque area of England.
Cotswold Archaeology announced this fascinating discovery in Gloucestershire, located in the Cotswold region of the UK. The site, dating back around 2,000 years, has yielded remnants of homes from the first and second centuries. This exciting work was done in collaboration with Historic England, and it all took place near Willersley.
Among the findings are several Roman villas, limestone structures, and at least three Iron Age ring grooves. Researchers also discovered various building materials, including ceramic roofs and plaster from decorated walls.
A key element of this excavation stemmed from an amateur metal detectorist who found two iron Roman cavalry swords in March 2023. Enthusiast Glenn Manning reported his remarkable finding to authorities, and the swords were subsequently donated to the local Corinium Museum in Cirencester.
Interestingly, X-ray analysis showed that one of the swords had a decorative pattern in its design, while the other was more plain. This distinction suggests different statuses for their owners, which is quite intriguing.
Peter Busby, an Onsite Project Officer with Cotswold Archaeology, expressed pride in the team’s achievements. He noted, “We’ve transformed cultivated fields, swords, and geophysical anomalies into narratives spanning hundreds of years.” It’s quite something to think about how many stories these finds could tell.
In addition to the swords, the team also found skeletal remains featuring a band of iron around an arm. A horse skull was discovered nearby, though it’s still unclear if it was linked to the Roman settlement.
As this work continues, there’s talk that once Historic England completes a report on these findings, the Cultural, Media and Sports Division might consider designating the site as a protected monument.
Glenn Manning, reflecting on his experience, described it as “surprising.” He had a feeling he would discover something special that day, which makes you wonder about the magic of such moments in archaeology.
The Roman conquest of Britain lasted from 43 AD until 410 AD, and remnants from this era continue to emerge today. Just recently, British archaeologists highlighted the discovery of a rare eight-sided Roman ring in Lincolnshire, showcasing how history is still revealing its treasures.
