Ancient shipwreck discovered in harbor of Croatian city featured in 'Game of Thrones'

Workers installing water pipelines in Croatia made a fascinating find—remnants of 18th-century wooden boats. This discovery occurred in Dubrovnik, a historic city famous for its role in HBO’s Game of Thrones.

The sunken vessel was unearthed at Dubrovnik’s old town port. Ivan Bukelic shared details with Nova TV, mentioning that the wooden structure was found back in April while they were engaged in pipeline installation.

The ship lay about 30 inches beneath the seabed. “I can now say I’ve discovered a boat in Dubrovnik,” Bukelic remarked, reflecting on the experience.

Marine archaeologist Ilena Radic Rossi verified that the ship is over 225 years old. She noted, “We can’t accurately determine the container type or dimensions yet, but radiocarbon tests suggest it dates back to the late 18th century.” This indicates a rich historical narrative just beneath the surface.

Rossi further stated that the remains are being safeguarded for further examination, emphasizing: “We have to protect it for the future.” It’s exciting to think about what this discovery could reveal but, of course, it’s not entirely surprising. Many shipwrecks have been identified across Europe this year, showcasing the region’s rich maritime history.
