Ancient Viking Treasures Found in Northern Germany

Archaeologists have uncovered a remarkable hoard of early medieval artifacts in a bank at the entrance to the Baltic Sea in northern Germany, attributed to the use of metal detectors.

The state archaeology department in Schleswig-Holstein (ALSH) shared these findings in a press release last May.

This discovery, dating back about 1,000 years, was made near Schrey, a significant location historically related to Viking trade routes. It seems to be associated with trade posts that were once considered minor but are now gaining attention.

A unique 1,200-year-old Christian cross was found during the excavation.

The hoard was first identified by a detectorist named Argen Spieswinkel.

“Follow-up searches using additional detectors helped pinpoint the exact location of these artifacts,” ALSH remarked.

“The systematic digging conducted by ALSH, with the assistance of volunteers, was essential in recovering these items,” officials noted.

The volunteers were seen tirelessly working the soil, searching for over 200 artifacts.

A man’s casual walk in nature leads to an extraordinary find: “Face to History.”

“This hoard contains roughly 200 items, primarily made of silver, along with hacksilver, fragments of Arabic coins (dirham), bars, and gems,” the report stated.

Officials emphasized that the delicate cross pendants are especially noteworthy, reflecting the early stages of Christianization in the region.

ALSH also pointed out that such hoards are often composed of objects that are buried or hidden, possibly for protection.

Along with the silver artifacts, ceramic fragments and ring stones were found, suggesting there might be an unknown settlement in the vicinity.

“These findings offer a captivating glimpse into the trade, cultural exchanges, and religious changes of the 10th century,” the statement concluded.

The Viking era spanned until about 800 AD, which places this particular storage in the latter part of that time period.

The discoveries come amid a number of Viking-related findings being reported across Europe.

In Sweden, officials have recently revealed the location of a Viking burial site with “Christian elements” near Linköping.
