Anders Lee’s Transition to Mammoth
It’s hard to believe what’s unfolded on Long Island over the last 14 seasons. Honestly, it’s been a rollercoaster. Yet, during his induction press conference in Utah last Friday, former Islanders captain Anders Lee donned a Mammoth jersey, which was a surprising sight for many fans.
Interestingly, his jersey number had been switched. His familiar 27 was now upside down as 72. Lee shared his thoughts on the stunning change—“a whirlwind few weeks,” to be precise—with the decision to sign a three-year contract with the Mammoth that averages about $5.4 million annually. That anticipation really feels like the pivotal point in this journey.
“This is a big change, there’s no denying that,” he acknowledged. “But for the last few weeks, I’ve been looking at this jersey and logo every day. I’m starting to like it even more, and I think I’m feeling comfortable.”
His departure in free agency has reshaped the Islanders in a significant way. For the past decade, Lee has been a constant presence on the team. Last season, he scored 19 goals and notched 42 points. Though he initially sought something different from what general manager Matthew Darche was willing to offer, he still chose to explore the market, even after the Islanders improved their proposal right before free agency began.
“I’m really glad Anders got the deal and the duration he was looking for,” Darche commented on July 1. This shift has created an interesting situation as he explained his playing style to reporters in Utah, discussing how his past experience with the Islanders would contribute to his new role with the Mammoths. The Islanders now face the possibility of short-term contracts, which could lead to further roster changes as the summers of 2027 and 2028 approach.
At the press conference, next to Lee was Vincent Trocheck, a former Rangers center recently traded to Utah. He referred to Lee as a “hurt” for teams to face, which certainly highlights Lee’s competitive edge.
Now part of an emerging Mammoths roster, Lee has ambitions of reaching new heights. Reflecting on his decision, he said, “Their opportunity is close, and it’s open. That was a significant factor in my desire to join a team with a shot at winning.”
