Anders Lee’s Game-Winning Goal vs. Panthers
Anders Lee, known for his goal-scoring close to the net, surprised everyone with a different kind of score. The Islanders’ captain skillfully maneuvered down the right side, dodging a defender with a backhand move before switching to a forehand and driving the winning shot past Sergei Bobrovsky. This clinched a thrilling 5-4 comeback victory against the Panthers on Sunday night at UBS Arena.
“It’s great, it’s fun, and that’s why we play,” Lee, 35, remarked after netting his 14th goal of the season. “It was one of those nights where the puck was tough, and we struggled to get shots, particularly early on. Creating chances wasn’t easy.”
“So I felt like I had earned it,” he added, possibly reflecting on his recent struggles—he had gone ten games without scoring before finding the net three times in his last three outings.
In other news, veteran winger Jonathan Drouin missed Saturday’s overtime win against Columbus due to a lower-body injury, as reported by coach Patrick Roy. Anthony Duclair stepped in for Drouin, teaming up with Cal Ritchie and Emile Heineman on the left side.
Meanwhile, backup goaltender David Rittich had a shaky start but managed to make 29 saves out of 33 shots during the win. Defenseman Ryan Purock briefly left the bench early in the third period but returned shortly after.
The Islanders also took a moment to honor Olympians from both teams after their first two games since the break, with forwards Bo Horvat (Canada) and Ondrej Palat (Czech Republic) being recognized.
Matthew Tkachuk, from Team USA and currently with Florida, received a huge ovation alongside a tribute to the entire U.S. men’s and women’s gold medal-winning teams. Additionally, Kimber Auerbach, Team USA’s long-time director of public relations for the Islanders, was acknowledged for her contributions.
