Anders Lee’s views on Lou Lamoriello leaving the Islanders

Anders Lee Reflects on Lou Lamoriello’s Tenure with Islanders

Anders Lee understands the nature of the business, even acknowledging the clichés that come with it. Yet, the longstanding presence of Lou Lamoriello around the Islanders over the past seven years left Lee feeling as if Lamoriello departed under his own conditions.

It was a tough moment for the captain, seeing the general manager who had so significantly shaped the current team, leaving his position. Lee expressed his feelings during BTIG’s Charity Day on Tuesday, where he participated alongside the Islander Children’s Foundation.

“It was difficult,” Lee remarked. “We’ve been through a lot together. When you have a relationship with someone who truly cares about you, saying goodbye is never easy.” He continued, “Unfortunately, that’s how our business operates. We have to continue enjoying what we do and keep pushing forward.”

Lamoriello had guided the Islanders to back-to-back conference finals in 2020 and 2021, but the team’s inability to win any playoff series since has been concerning. This season’s failure to qualify for the playoffs was the final factor that prompted ownership to announce they would not renew Lamoriello’s contract as president of Hockey Operations and General Manager, a position he held until his 82nd year.

It remains uncertain if Lamoriello will stay on in an advisory capacity after a new general manager is appointed.

“Lou was, in many ways, everyone’s best mentor,” Lee shared. “He genuinely helped me understand the game better, both as a player and a captain. I’m grateful for everything he did for me and my family.” He added, “Sometimes, what Lou had to say wasn’t what you wanted to hear, but it was always aimed at making you a better individual and athlete. He filled that role for everyone who passed through our organization during his time.”

St. John’s manager Rick Pitino, who had been hired by Lamoriello at Providence College in 1985, echoed similar sentiments about his longtime friend.

“He leads with incredible integrity,” Pitino told the media. “He treats professional athletes in his organization like they are family, which is quite rare in the current sports landscape.”

As of now, the Islanders have not made a new hire, but it was disclosed that Mark Bergevin and Matthew Dersch were interviewed for the position recently. Anyone stepping into this role will do so just in time for the scouting combine starting June 1st.

“It was great fun for about 20 minutes. Watching everything unfold brought a spark to our team,” Lee commented. “I think it’s exciting—there are some excellent choices available. People who could have a significant impact on our club.”

Defenseman Matthew Schaefer is being recognized as a top prospect this year, along with centers Michael Meatha and James Hagens, who hails from Long Island.

“I trust our scouting staff. They know what they’re doing and will make a fantastic decision for our team,” Lee stated. “From what I hear, there are some fantastic options out there that could really influence our club.”

In an update, the Islanders announced that Beauvatt sustained a lower-body injury during the Team Canada World Championships and will be seeing a team doctor in Long Island. Additionally, Horvat will miss the remaining World Championships as Hockey Canada revealed that Porter Martone, a projected top-five draft pick, has been removed from the roster.
