Anderson Cooper brings on a top Hollywood agent, hinting at a possible departure from CNN.

Anderson Cooper has recently enlisted a well-respected Hollywood super agent, a move that has sparked discussions regarding the possibility of CNN anchors like him considering career changes as the network grapples with impending budget cuts. Cooper, the 58-year-old son of the late fashion icon Gloria Vanderbilt, has decided to part ways with his longtime agency, United Talent Agency, in favor of the Creative Artists Agency and its prominent dealmaker, Brian Lourd.

This news was first reported by Semafor and Variety, with a CNN spokesperson opting not to comment on the situation.

Cooper’s decision to hire Lourd aligns with a broader trend of aligning with more Hollywood-savvy professionals, reflecting an inclination that extends beyond traditional broadcast journalism, as noted in Variety.

Lourd’s impressive client list includes notable figures like Scarlett Johansson, George Clooney, and Brad Pitt, among others.

Cooper’s recent transition raises questions about whether he is preparing to diversify his career amid the financial challenges facing traditional television news. Throughout the years, he has expanded his media presence, not only anchoring “Anderson Cooper 360” on CNN but also contributing to CBS’s “60 Minutes” and even guest hosting “Jeopardy!” at one point.

There’s also speculation that Cooper might have pursued a more permanent role with Kelly Ripa on Disney’s “Live” morning show, which could indicate he’s looking to branch out beyond hard news with this agent switch.

Industry insiders have suggested that Cooper’s timing is strategic, particularly as CNN reconsiders its talent management and cost strategies amidst a restructuring led by Warner Bros. Discovery’s CEO, David Zaslav. This restructuring aims to distinguish the television network from its streaming and production ventures.

Notably, recent reports indicate that Cooper earns a significantly higher salary than some of his colleagues, a point that CNN has neither confirmed nor denied, challenging the figures surfacing in the media.

With many seasoned anchors either leaving or facing pay cuts, Cooper’s circumstances are indicative of a shifting landscape at CNN, where figures like Chris Wallace and his former colleagues like Don Lemon and Jim Acosta have also departed from key positions.

Cooper’s contract with CNN, originally signed in 2016 and believed to extend for at least five more years, was seen as a strategy to secure his commitment, especially to prevent his participation in other morning shows.

Additionally, Cooper has broadened his profile through podcasts focusing on various topics and appearances during holiday broadcasts with Andy Cohen, which have become a staple for CNN. Meanwhile, the broader media environment is also shifting, with companies like Paramount Global merging with SkyDance Media to achieve significant cost savings.

As major players like Comcast look to scale down their cable assets, the landscape for news organizations, including CNN, continues to evolve under pressure from various economic factors.
