Andrew Benintendi’s big hit helps White Sox avoid 121st loss

CHICAGO — The Chicago White Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-3 on Wednesday night on Andrew Benintendi's single in the bottom of the 10th inning, avoiding a record-breaking 121st loss for the second straight game.

Chicago is tied with the 1962 New York Mets for the most losses in a season in the modern major league system.

The team faces Los Angeles again on Thursday before finishing its schedule with a three-game series at Detroit.

Former Yankee Benintendi hit a single to left-center field with one out against Jose Quijada (2-1) for his second straight game-winning hit and helped the White Sox (38-120) shake off their stigma for the second straight night.

Designated runner Miguel Vargas scored from second base.

On Tuesday, Benintendi hit a game-tying single in the eighth inning to lead Chicago to a 3-2 victory.

Corey Lee hit a two-run homer in the second inning Wednesday night to give the White Sox a 2-0 lead.

Lenin Sosa hit a game-tying solo home run in the fourth inning off Jose Suarez to put Chicago back on top.

The Angels had a runner on third base in the seventh inning against Eniel de los Santos.

However, Kevin Pillar was called into a double play and the team got nothing.

The sparse crowd was mostly quiet until the eighth inning, when fans began voicing their displeasure with Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf.

They chanted “Sell the team!” and “Jerry sucks!” and got louder and louder when the Angels tied the game with Justin Anderson.

Los Angeles loaded the bases with one out and Michael Stefanik bunted on a squeeze play to tie the game at 3-3.

Taylor Ward then got into a double play.

The Angels (63-95) tied a franchise record with their 95th loss, matching the mark set by the 1968 and 1980 teams.

White Sox starter Davis Martin gave up two runs and three hits in 3 2/3 innings.

The right-hander recorded a career-high five walks and one hit by pitch before exiting the game with the bases loaded in the fourth inning.

Michael Soroka came to the mound and gave up a two-run single to Ward.

It was the only hit he allowed in 2 1/3 innings.

Jared Schuster (2-4) pitched 10 innings.

Suarez pitched five innings for Los Angeles, allowing three runs and five hits.

Chicago had never lost by more than 106 points until this year.

The White Sox achieved that milestone with plenty of room to spare with a win over the New York Mets on September 1st.

Chicago tied the American League record with 119 losses at San Diego on Saturday and tied the 1962 Mets the next day.

But the White Sox, more likely to lose than any team since the 1899 Cleveland Spiders went 20-134, have overturned history over the past two nights.
