Perhaps there’s more research to be done here?

Former Governor Andrew Cuomo has been vocal about his belief in charter schools, a stance that puts him at odds with his main opponent in the mayoral race, Zoran Mamdani.

Cuomo shared an infographic on X that criticizes his adversaries, particularly highlighting their opposition to charter schools. He asserts his support for these educational institutions.

Interestingly, during his time as governor, he largely refrained from advocating for charters in the heat of a major Democratic campaign. Instead, he leaned towards issues backed by the influential United Federation of Teachers.

His campaign’s educational outline notably omitted classroom charters and only vaguely referenced his fragmented advocacy within a comprehensive 25-point education plan.

“Specialized high schools and strong public schools, especially in underserved communities, deserve support and expansion rather than politicization,” the plan noted.

Cuomo has not clearly articulated whether he still favors lifting the caps on charter schools, a position he endorsed during his governorship.

Mamdani is firmly against charter schools, which distinguishes him starkly from Cuomo.

Jennifer Weber, an education expert at the Manhattan Institute, pointed out Cuomo’s pro-charter stance during his governorship, speculating that he toned down his rhetoric during the primaries to gain favor with the UFT.

Since the UFT decided to back Mamdani after his impressive primary win in June, he has been campaigning as an independent, allowing him more freedom to advocate for charter schools while criticizing the union and its leadership.

“The essential goal is to improve educational outcomes, and charter schools seem to be yielding better results. It’s an important aspect for Mamdani,” she commented.

Cuomo’s current platform includes a section dedicated to “Expanding and Protecting Charter Schools,” advocating for increased state caps to facilitate the opening of more charter schools in NYC.

In a press conference earlier this August, Cuomo reiterated his support for eliminating the cap.

“Are we choosing to lift the charter caps or aligning ourselves with the teachers’ unions?” questioned Democratic consultant Chris Sosa.

A seasoned political strategist remarked, “Though summer isn’t over, old habits are hard to break. Sometimes, the simplest things make the fastest impact.”

Before his controversial resignation in 2021, Cuomo presented himself as a “student lobbyist,” passionately defending charter schools.

He also enforced laws that required the city to cover charter school expenses if it denied co-hosting arrangements in public schools, directly challenging Bill de Blasio’s administration.

“Through his years in public service, the governor has shown a commitment to charter schools. Unlike many, he took tangible steps to raise the cap in NYC and navigate “the red tape,”” someone noted.

“It’s essential to help the children who genuinely need these options.”
