Andrew Cuomo receives endorsement for NYC mayor over Mamdani

New York Daily News Endorses Cuomo for Mayor

The New York Daily News has thrown its support behind independent candidate Andrew Cuomo in the race for New York City mayor. In a recent editorial, they criticized Democrat Zoran Mamdani, labeling him a “crusty, foul-mouthed hack.”

The editorial highlighted Mamdani’s inconsistent performance in the final mayoral debate, noting that it reflected ongoing issues with his campaign. “His narrow focus on affordability, childcare, and rent, combined with anti-Semitic undertones, reveals a deeper unpreparedness for the role,” the paper stated. “When asked to elaborate beyond these points, he stumbles—a sign of his inadequacy for office.”

Conversely, the board acknowledged Cuomo’s faults, particularly the controversies that led to his resignation from the governor’s office in 2021. However, they emphasized his decade-long experience as governor, asserting that he is fully capable of managing the complexities of city government.

Polls Show Mamdani Ahead

The Daily News has also pointed out that Mamdani has recently taken the lead in polling, but criticized him for lacking a coherent plan to finance his ambitious proposals, such as implementing universal healthcare without tax increases. They expressed concerns about his failure to tackle pressing issues like police reform and housing.

“It’s essential to notice what he avoids discussing. When pressed, he tends to dodge difficult questions. His flashy promises might initially enchant some, but they may ultimately leave his supporters disillusioned and New York in a precarious position,” the editorial concluded.

Cuomo Warns of Consequences

Cuomo has cautioned that if Mamdani wins, the city could face significant challenges. The editorial board pointed out that Cuomo’s lengthy career provides more experience than any of his opponents.

The piece wrapped up with a stark message: “New York must progress. With Mamdani, we risk retreating. With Cuomo, we gain a chance to advance.”

As the election approaches, early voting has begun in New York City, with the mayoral election set for November 4th.

Recent polling data shows Mamdani leading with 49%, while Cuomo trails at 28%. Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa stands at 13%.
