Andrew Cuomo Signals His Intent to Run Independently for Mayor of NYC

Cuomo Remains in New York City Mayoral Race as a Third-Party Candidate

Former Governor Andrew Cuomo hasn’t given up on his bid to become mayor of New York City, despite his recent loss to socialist Zoran Mamdani in the Democratic primary. He aims to continue campaigning as a third-party candidate.

“To win that,” Cuomo shared on social media, elaborating on his new intentions. His defeat was surprising, considering his long-standing ties to the Democratic Party, but he lost to the 33-year-old Mamdani.

In his post, Cuomo took aim at Mamdani, claiming he offers “a smooth slogan, but no real solution.” He emphasized the need for a city with affordable rents and safer streets, hoping that families won’t be financially crushed while raising children.

“It’s New York City, as we know it. It’s still possible,” Cuomo stated, calling for a mayor who wouldn’t abandon the city’s potential and possesses the experience needed to revitalize it.

Cuomo stepped down as governor in 2021 amid a series of sexual harassment allegations. He maintains that the controversies were politically motivated, and he feels he has moved past those challenges. Some of his supporters expressed discontent following his primary defeat, suggesting he may have taken their feedback to heart.

“I will go out on the street every day, meet where you are and hear both your concerns and solutions. It is my responsibility to earn your votes in the coming months,” he explained.

Mamdani has also accused Mayor Eric Adams, who is pursuing third-party options himself, of catering to wealthy interests. In response, he stated, “While Andrew Cuomo and Eric Adams seek billionaire approval behind closed doors, our campaign is centered on the needs of working New Yorkers who demand a shift in political direction.”

In addition, former prosecutor Jim Walden is running as an independent candidate, and Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels, is on the Republican ticket.
