But Barr said, “In the end, this will be a family's decision regarding our timeline.”

A source close to Barr told Fox News Digital in 2023 that he could become a “serious candidate” for McConnell's seat in 2026.

In a veiled swipe at McConnell, Barr told Fox News Digital, “It's time for Kentucky to have a US senator supporting President Trump.”
At this point, McConnell is currently opposed to Trump's three Cabinet Secretaries currently on offer. Director of National Defense Secretary, National Intelligence Director Tarshi Gabbard, and Director of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
“He's now voting against almost everything,” the president said of McConnell on Thursday. “He's a very bitter guy.”
Trump also said McConnell was “mentally unequipped” and “sent the Republicans to hell.”
“I think it's time for Kentucky to have a US senator who has a vision to not only make America great again, but make America great again. I'm going to run,” Burr said. “They see me as someone who has proven their support of President Trump's first American agenda, but they support the Kentucky signature industry, and are building block services and accessibility. Mitch McConnell resigns as Republican leader
When asked for comment, McConnell Aide told Fox News Digital that the senator had not announced plans for 2026.
McConnell, 83 years old in late February, left the Senate Republican leader in November 2024. McConnell was the longest serving leader in the history of the US Senate.
Meanwhile, Barr told Fox News Digital, “I'm my guy.”
“People try to nail me as this type of Republican or that type of Republican, but at the end I am the first conservative in America to love my hometown of Kentucky,” he said.
“I think what sets me apart is that no one else who watches the race was in the trench of work to drain the swamp with President Trump,” he continued. “I have a proven record, and I think it distinguishes me from anyone else.”

But Burr emphasized that his decision on whether to run for the US Senate “is not dependent on others.”
