Train Dad from New York Returns
Andy Byford, the former president of the NYC Transit, who became well-known for his resignation following tensions with then-Governor Andrew Cuomo, is now back in New York. The White House has brought him on board to lead a significant renovation project at Penn Station.
Currently an executive with Amtrak, Byford will take charge of one of the country’s major transportation initiatives, according to official confirmation from the White House. It’s kind of a big deal, right? Penn Station definitely needs some TLC.
There’s been some chatter about this move, particularly given the differences it creates between British transport officials and MTA Chairman Janno Lieber. It seems there’s been quite a reshuffling, with U.S. Transport Secretary Sean Duffy separating the project from the MTA’s jurisdiction. So, yeah, it’s complicated.
Interestingly, the Trump administration handed a significant role to Amtrak. Byford has been with the company since 2023, and his experience in transit—having managed systems in Sydney, Toronto, and London—should bring some valuable insights to this project. You know, I think there’s a certain excitement in seeing someone with his track record lead such a crucial initiative.
Back in 2020, Byford faced challenges under Cuomo’s leadership. He mentioned feeling that Cuomo would undermine his efforts to a degree that he “couldn’t tolerate.” It’s a twist of fate that now he’s back, at least somewhat in control of a major project in New York City.
