Angel Reese breaks WNBA record for most rebounds in a season

The WNBA's leading rebounder currently holds the league record in that category.

Angel Reese set a new season rebound record with her 405th rebound in a game on Sunday, as the Chicago Sky lost to the Minnesota Lynx, 79-74.

Reese surpassed Sylvia Fowles' record.

The freshman star out of LSU is leading the league in rebounding this year with an average of 13.1 rebounds per game in 32 games.

“I knew I could always get an offensive rebound, a defensive rebound,” Reese said after the game. “I knew I could come in and do it right away, which is something a lot of guys don't want to do. A lot of people think it's because I'm getting my own rebounds, but statistically that's not the case.”

Reese had 19 rebounds on Sunday, 12 of which were on the defensive end and seven on the offensive end.

“A lot of people think I'm the tallest guy on the court, but I'm not the tallest guy on the court,” Reese continued of his accomplishments. “Just being able to go out there and attack hard. Doing things that a lot of people aren't willing to do. Defense and rebounding is what wins championships and I've won championships at every level by just doing that.”

“I came into the league before I had developed my offensive game, but just being able to come in and take that on my shoulders is something I've always been able to do and I knew it would come in handy.”

Reese is a contender for WNBA Rookie of the Year honors along with Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark, who has also set numerous records this season.

The Sky and Fever played on Friday and Reese had 11 rebounds in the game, surpassing Tina Charles' record for most double-doubles by a rookie (23).

Chicago currently sits in eighth place in the WNBA, half a game behind the ninth-place Atlanta Dream for the league's final playoff spot.
