All-Star Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky might be nearing the end of her time with the team.

Reese, who was the seventh overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, hasn’t played since a significant injury earlier in the season. She previously missed seven games in July and was ruled out for Tuesday’s matchup against Las Vegas. There’s uncertainty about her participation in the season finale on Thursday.

This season, the Sky will finish missing the playoffs for a second consecutive year, a sharp contrast to their success just a few seasons ago when they won their first WNBA Championship.

Reese has been a standout in her rookie campaign, leading the league in rebounds, but her relationship with the team has become strained since a recent interview where she expressed her frustrations. After publicly apologizing to her teammates, she has been sidelined for half a game.

“I’m not content with where I am. We need to attract high-caliber players, and that’s not something I’m willing to settle for,” she mentioned in the interview.

With the absence of players like Courtney Vandersloot and seasoned veterans such as Elizabeth Williams and Rebecca Allen, the atmosphere within the organization appears to be tense.

The situation leaves many wondering about the future for both Reese and the Sky, as they were expected to become foundational players for the franchise.

Reese might seek a trade given her feelings of discontent, suggesting she feels she’s being overlooked in the current situation.

Still on a two-year rookie contract, she will soon become a restricted free agent.

At a postgame press conference, coach Tyler Marsh was asked about the changes in Reese’s condition, especially after he appeared hopeful earlier. “She mentioned physical issues after warm-ups, so we couldn’t push her to play while in pain,” Marsh clarified.

Reese’s remarks have sparked conversation among WNBA players. Sophie Cunningham from the Fever highlighted the need to maintain team cohesion. “There are certain things that just shouldn’t be said,” she remarked on her podcast, stressing the importance of putting the team’s interests ahead of personal feelings.
