Angela Bassett references Ariana DeBose’s viral rap at NAACP Awards

Angela Bassett certainly “did it.”

The “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” star was named Entertainer of the Year at the 2023 NAACP Image Awards on Saturday, referring to Ariana DeVose’s viral rap, which she named in her acceptance speech.

“I think Angela Bassett did it,” joked the 64-year-old actress, mimicking DeBose’s iconic shoulder move.

Bassett made an appearance at the awards show less than a week after DeBose, 32, performed the BAFTA opening ceremony with an original rap praising the female nominees.

The performance, which many called “humiliating,” was soon became a viral mememany social media users endorsed the Oscar winner, claiming she created an iconic pop culture moment.

“Listen! Ariana is everywhere – you did this. You created the culture. Few reach it! Hahahahahaha, I love it,” one commented. Clips of Bassett referencing the now iconic moment.

“I really can’t wait for ‘Anne Juler Burset Did It’ to be part of the 2023 wrap-up video,” added another.

Earlier in the night, Bassett revealed that he had actually contacted DeBose in the aftermath of the performance.

“I DMed her last night. Yay. It was beautiful,” she said. told Variety on the red carpet.

“I just wanted to make sure she’s okay because it’s getting a lot of attention. And she’s okay.”

The “West Side Story” actress dropped the names of several A-listers in the award show’s opening segment, and also featured covers of “Sisters Are Doing It for Themselves” and “We Are Family.”

“Angela Bassett did it / Viola Davis, my Empress / Blanchett, Kate, you’re a genius / And Jamie Lee [Curtis]you are all of us,” the Broadway star sang in part.

DeBose later said that regardless of the reaction from the audience, the performance was “the best”.

“Honestly, it’s not like, ‘Hey BAFTA, let me in!'” Believe it or not, they actually called me,” DeBose said. told BBC Radio 2’s ‘Breakfast Show’ last week.

“But it was a mandate. It was like, ‘Come congratulate the ladies,’ and I was like, ‘Absolutely!’ We did it and it was fun. Not gonna lie, I had a blast.

DeBose added that she spent the rest of the night “cutting the rug” with fellow actress Emma Thompson.

“It was great. I had a great time.”
