Angels announcer Wayne Randazzo weighed in with MLB on Saturday night regarding a scoring change that would end Nolan Chanuel’s on-base streak.
Chanuel has reached base in all 36 games he played in MLB, a streak dating back to last season.
However, the league retroactively changed the scoring starting with the March 30th game between the Angels and Orioles.
In the ninth inning of that game, Chanuel reached first base on an infield hit, preserving the winning streak.
However, MLB ruled that Baltimore relief pitcher Mike Bauman made an error on the play, retroactively ending Chanuel’s streak at 30.
He was on base again Saturday night against the Boston Red Sox, extending his streak to 37 games.
The MLB record for consecutive starts on base is 38 games, set by Truck Hanna of the Yankees in 1918.
Randazzo, a former Mets radio announcer, was clearly unhappy with the league.
He talked not only about Chanuel’s streak, but other things he feels the league should focus on.
“Negative story after negative story, scandal after scandal” Randazzo Said. “Oakland was a big mistake. He’s wearing a funny looking jersey. Today, the MLBPA is challenging the league on the pitch clock because of all the pitcher injuries. Not to mention your global superstar. is embroiled in a gambling scandal. But on top of that, there’s a young player trying to make his mark. He got on base and reached base safely in every game he played. And the league… , allowing this scoring change to end his winning streak and kill this narrative that’s happening in Major League Baseball. It’s absurd.”
Analyst Mark Gubitza agreed.
“If you think about it, we’ve been hearing positive voices from all over the social media world,” Gubitza said. “I can’t tell you how much that touched everyone. To start his career — he only entered college last year. He was still playing college baseball at this point. It was a base hit.”
Gubicza added that it would be like the NBA taking away assists and triple-doubles from LeBron James, but he pointed out that that would never happen.
