Angels Manager Takes Time Off for Health Reasons

Ron Washington, manager of the Angels, will be away from the team for an unspecified duration due to health concerns, as reported by general manager Perry Minasian on Friday.

At 73, Washington will continue to be involved with the team but will step back from his usual role in the dugout while he addresses his personal health issues.

In the meantime, Angels bench coach Ray Montgomery will assume the duties of interim manager for the game against the Astros on Friday night, with Washington planning to observe from a suite.

Washington is currently in his second season with the Angels, and as of Friday, the team holds a record of 36 wins and 38 losses. Earlier in the season, he had introduced a new training regimen after a disappointing opening day against the Orioles.

Left fielder Taylor Ward commented positively about the new training approach, saying, “I think everything I’ve washed so far is great. I love it, and it might be something we need.”

Washington also initiated a full team workout on what was meant to be a day off, emphasizing the importance of staying engaged and focused.

Reflecting on the team’s performance, Washington expressed optimism about improving from last season’s disappointing 63-99 record. “We’re going to get on that track,” he noted. “We have to stay in the process. It’s all about work, learning, and applying ourselves.” His focus remains on ensuring players stay mentally free to play the game without unnecessary pressure.
