Angels minor league player Rio Foster in critical condition after major car crash

Los Angeles Angels outfielder Rio Foster was hospitalized following a vehicle accident early Friday morning, as reported by the team.

“Rio is currently receiving medical care at a local hospital and remains in a critical state,” the Angels stated. They added, “We urge the entire Angels community to keep Rio and his family in our thoughts during this challenging time.”

Foster, who is 22, is playing in the minor leagues for the High-A affiliate, the Tri-City Dust Devils. They were supposed to play against Hillsboro that evening, but the game has been suspended.

The Dust Devils expressed their concern, saying, “The thoughts and prayers of the entire Dust Devils organization are with Rio Foster and others involved in the car accident.” Foster was selected in the 16th round of the 2023 draft after playing at Darlington Technical College in South Carolina.

This season, he’s been quite impressive, hitting .267 with 10 home runs and 40 RBIs, and he was named Northwest League Player of the Month after a stellar August.

Ray Montgomery, who has taken over as interim manager of the Angels following Ron Washington’s departure due to health issues, expressed hopes for Foster’s recovery, saying, “We wish the best, and that’s all we can do.” He noted that, unfortunately, he was working with limited information. “What I know is definitely more important than what’s happening here right now.”

On that same Friday, the Athletics triumphed over the Angels. The second match of their three-game series is set for Saturday night, with the Angels currently sitting in fourth place in the American League West Division.
