Angels player suffers bizarre setback while rehabbing knee injury

Miguel Sano tops the list of strangest injuries in the 2024 clubhouse.

The Los Angeles Angels infielder has been on the disabled list since May 1, retroactively dating to April 28, with inflammation in his left knee.

Last week, the team sent him to the Arizona Complex League for rehab as he works toward preparing for his return.

However, while rehabbing the injury, he suffered an even more serious injury off the field.

Angels manager Ron Washington said Saturday that Sano suffered burns from applying a heating pad to his leg for too long.

It is not thought to be serious but the manager said it is clearly hindering him significantly and after playing on Wednesday and Thursday he has not played since.

Sano went 1-for-2 in each of his first two rehab games and had two hits in his second game.

By the time of his first injury, he was batting .262 (16-for-61) with one home run and five RBIs.

Sano was one of the best power pitchers in baseball when he first came up to the major leagues, hitting 30 or more home runs in a season twice with the Minnesota Twins, but he batted just .217 combined during an injury-plagued stretch from 2018-2022 and wasn’t signed for the 2023 season.

Things continue to be tough for the Angels, with Mike Trout torn his meniscus after just 29 games. Trout had been in great form, hitting 10 home runs before the injury.
