DSA Candidate’s Critique of Vice President
Angie Nixon, a candidate with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), has taken another shot at Vice President JD Vance. She’s made a joke about “his eyeliner” and emphasized that her ancestors played a role in constructing the buildings he frequents.
During a rally in Tallahassee, Florida, alongside Senator Bernie Sanders, she expressed her frustration with politicians. “They’re nasty. They’re lying. The truth ain’t in them,” she stated, urging supporters to rally for her campaign.
Nixon called for action: “We need to push back on lies with the truth. This isn’t just my campaign; it’s our campaign. The question isn’t whether I’ll win but if we’re ready to change the course of our country for the next 250 years. So, I need y’all to push back.”
She also directed remarks at Vance and members of the Trump administration, noting, “But Ashley Moody, Donald Trump, JD Vance with his eyeliner – y’all know that man told me to get out of this country. Shame on him.”
Despite being a member of the DSA, Nixon insists she does not identify as a socialist. Still, she asserted that her ancestors helped establish the foundations of the country. “The very buildings he’s walking around in,” she declared confidently. “But they can call me whatever they want. With your help, on November 3, they’ll be calling me senator.”
Nixon’s response seems rooted in frustration towards Vance’s commentary during his own campaign stops. He suggested that individuals who dislike America, particularly socialists, should consider leaving. “I hate to say it, but here in Florida, you’ve got some real choice Democrats,” he remarked, singling out Nixon. He added, “People who know that socialism kills, people who have seen it affect their friends and family.”
Vance’s comments drew applause when he stated, “If those are your views, then get the hell out of here. You don’t belong in America.”
Instead of addressing Vance’s critique of socialism, Nixon redirected the conversation back to “his eyeliner.” “I don’t wanna couch my words here: I know JD Vance and absent Ashley Moody are more focused on themselves and their billionaire buddies than those they represent,” she said. “But this is my home.”
She went further: “It’s disheartening to have someone come to my home state to tell me to ‘get out of America’ while they enjoy the comfort of the buildings my ancestors constructed. Imagine telling their descendants they don’t belong here.”
Nixon isn’t alone; other socialist candidates also reference their ancestry to support their views. For example, Colorado’s candidate Melat Kiros has mentioned her lineage of “proud, proud black socialists and radicals” who link racial and economic justice.
