During an appearance on “Meet the Press NOW,” Florida Democratic Senate nominee Angie Nixon clarified her position regarding her affiliation with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). Host Kristen Welker pressed her on why she would join an organization that advocates for the elimination of the Senate, the very office she is seeking.
Nixon explained she joined the DSA due to their support for public housing, healthcare access, assistance for homeless veterans, and reducing the influence of money in politics. She countered the claims made by incumbent Republican Senator Ashley Moody, who painted her as a socialist. “Ashley Moody knows that I’m not a socialist,” Nixon stated, emphasizing her alignment with specific DSA causes over broader socialist principles.
She made it clear that she does not support the DSA’s calls for abolishing the Senate or drafting a new constitution. While Nixon also rejected the idea of defunding the military, she advocated for increased scrutiny of defense budgets. However, she sidestepped a direct response regarding lifting sanctions on Iran.
“I don’t believe in defunding anything. I think we need to make sure that we are scrutinizing them, and we need to make sure we’re spending money the right way,” she said.
The Republican National Committee quickly seized on her DSA connection, suggesting her views align with far-left ideologies on various issues, including crime and immigration. RNC spokeswoman Emma Hall expressed in a statement, “Socialist lunatic Angie Nixon wants to empty our prisons, open our borders, and raise your taxes to bankroll their far-left agenda.”
When asked about her stance on capitalism, Nixon, who identifies as a small business owner, remarked, “I live in a capitalistic society. I’m a small business owner. I like to make money. I don’t see what the problem is.” She further clarified that she is a capitalist advocating for strong regulatory measures.
Nixon’s campaign platform includes proposals for Medicare for All, free childcare, a national rent freeze, an eviction moratorium, a universal jobs program, and the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. She dismissed critiques regarding her DSA affiliation, suggesting they divert attention from real issues affecting Florida voters.
Moody has characterized the upcoming general election as a critical battle against Nixon and her progressive allies, claiming they seek to fundamentally alter the country. “Angie Nixon, who will be my opponent in November, and her comrades want to destroy this country and everything that it is built on,” Moody stated in a prior interview.
Nixon emerged as the Democratic nominee after a decisive win over former National Security Council official Alexander Vindman, running on a modest budget compared to her opponent. The upcoming election will determine who serves the remaining two years of Senator Marco Rubio’s term after he took on a new role.
Efforts to obtain comments from Nixon, Moody, and the DSA have not yet received responses.
