Response to GOP Critique Sparks Eyeliner Debate
Florida’s candidate for the Senate, Democrat Angie Nixon, had an interesting retort to Republicans, including Vice President JD Vance, who urged socialists to leave the country, focusing instead on “his eyeliner.”
Vance remarked during an appearance in Lakeland that, despite Florida being a state of rational thinkers, there are indeed some “real choice Democrats” around. He specifically pointed to Angie Nixon, whom he described as a self-identified socialist running against Ashley Moody in the upcoming election. Vance referenced the many immigrants who legally came to Florida from Latin America, emphasizing their understanding of the detrimental effects of socialism as they witnessed it in their communities.
“When Angie Nixon identifies as a socialist, the appropriate reaction is to tell her to leave,” Vance stated, receiving applause from the crowd.

Nixon is indeed affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), although she denies labeling herself as a socialist.
In a segment on NBC News, she accused incumbent Republican Senator Ashley Moody of lying when Moody pointed out her DSA membership. Nixon claimed, “When voices get squeaky and high-pitched, they’re usually lying,” despite her support for socialist policies like universal healthcare.
Instead of addressing Vance’s comments about socialism, Nixon diverted the conversation by mentioning his eyeliner. “I don’t want to hold back: I know JD Vance, his eyeliner, and absent Ashley Moody, are the ones running away from tough situations because they prioritize their interests over those they represent,” she remarked. “But this is my home.”
She added, “The most ordinary man imaginable came to my home state to tell me to ‘get out of America’ while enjoying the benefits of what my ancestors built. Can you imagine standing on the shoulders of those who created this country and then telling their descendants they don’t belong here?”
Nixon also criticized the “weird, intrusive agenda” of Republicans, a claim that some might find questionable given the Democratic stance on issues like gender identity and immigration. “Wanting lower property insurance and healthcare for families isn’t un-American; it’s what working people deserve,” she continued. “They can take their tech-bro cash and their strange agenda somewhere else because I’m not going anywhere.”
Interestingly, Nixon seemed to think her comments about eyeliner were noteworthy enough to mention them again, saying Vance’s eyes really “pop.”

As it stands, according to the current RealClearPolling average, Moody is ahead of Nixon by about 6.3 percent in Florida.
